Three people, including a father and his son, have died after suffocating inside a septic tank at Makindu Boys High School in Makindu, Makueni County, in a tragic incident involving routine waste management work.

The victims were reportedly contracted to drain sewage from the school’s septic system when the accident occurred on Thursday, May 28.

Preliminary reports indicate that the workers may have lost consciousness after running out of oxygen in the confined space, leading to their deaths inside the tank.

Emergency response teams from the Makueni County disaster management unit, working alongside the Kenya Red Cross, were dispatched to the scene and spent hours conducting a difficult recovery operation.

All three bodies were eventually retrieved and taken to a nearby hospital for preservation as authorities secured the scene.

Police have since launched investigations to determine whether safety procedures were followed, including the use of protective equipment and whether proper protocols for confined-space entry were observed.

Officials are expected to establish if negligence or lack of supervision contributed to the fatal incident.

The tragedy has renewed concerns over workplace safety standards in hazardous environments, particularly in institutions where maintenance work is outsourced to informal or unregulated contractors.

The incident occurred just hours after another major tragedy in Nakuru County, where 16 students died in a dormitory fire at Utumishi Girls High School, deepening a day of national mourning.
