Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have recovered a police firearm that went missing in Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD), nearly a week after it was reported lost by an officer attached to a former Member of Parliament.
According to a police report filed at Central Police Station, the Ceska pistol was recovered inside a supermarket at Development House along Moi Avenue following intelligence-led investigations.
The firearm had initially been reported missing by the officer, who claimed he lost it while visiting a barber shop and spa on Mukhtar Daddah Street.
Investigators established that the officer arrived at the premises at around 4:00 p.m. and requested a complimentary massage. During the session, he allegedly removed the pistol and placed it beneath a cushion before proceeding with the treatment.
The officer later reported feeling dizzy and decided to rest at the spa. However, upon waking up at approximately 11:00 p.m., he discovered the firearm was missing. After unsuccessfully searching for the weapon, he formally reported the matter to police on May 25.
A breakthrough came when detectives traced the firearm to a supermarket luggage holding area on Moi Avenue. Investigators found the pistol concealed inside a carrier bag, which had been hidden within two additional bags and mixed among fruits stored at the facility.
Preliminary examination revealed the firearm was still inside its holster and that the magazine remained loaded. However, detectives noted a discrepancy in the ammunition count.
“The firearm and its magazine were intact in the holster. Upon examination, the magazine contained 13 rounds of 9mm ammunition, two rounds fewer than previously reported,” investigators stated.
CCTV footage reviewed by detectives showed an unidentified individual arriving at the supermarket on May 28 at approximately 1:37 p.m. and leaving the concealed firearm at the luggage storage section before walking away. The suspect's face was reportedly concealed, complicating identification efforts.
Crime Scene Investigation officers processed the area and secured the firearm as evidence. The weapon has since been placed in police custody pending further forensic examination.
Detectives are now pursuing leads to identify and locate the individual captured on CCTV, as investigations continue into how the firearm disappeared and who may have been involved in its concealment.
