He became acting Interior Cabinet Secretary on 8 July 2017 after the death of Joseph Ole Nkaissery. At the same time, he continued as Cabinet Secretary for Education, Science, and Technology, holding both roles.
In January 2018, President Uhuru Kenyatta officially appointed him as Cabinet Secretary for Internal Security and Coordination of National Government.
On 22 January 2019, through Executive Order Number 1 of 2019, President Kenyatta appointed him chairperson of the National Development Implementation and Communication Cabinet Committee.
This committee includes all Cabinet Secretaries, the Attorney-General, and the Head of the Public Service, who acts as the secretariat. Early Life and Education Fred Okengo Matiang’i was born in 1968 in Borabu, Nyamira County, Kenya, which was then part of the larger Kisii District.
He grew up in a rural area within the Gusii community. Like many public figures, details about his early childhood are not widely publicized.
Matiang’i attended a local primary school in Nyamira before joining Kiabonyoru Mixed Secondary School between 1981 and 1984 for his O-levels. He pursued higher education with dedication: Bachelor’s Degree: Bachelor of Arts in Education (specializing in English Literature) from Kenyatta University. Master’s Degree: Master of Arts in English Literature from the University of Nairobi. PhD: Doctor of Philosophy in Communication and Comparative Literature from the University of Nairobi. Background Before joining the cabinet, Dr. Fred Matiang'i had a strong background in academia. He earned a PhD, reportedly in communication and comparative literature, and lectured at institutions such as the University of Nairobi and Egerton University.

Matiang’i left his cabinet secretary role after President William Ruto was elected in August 2022 and took office.

His son tied the knot in 2022, shortly after Matiang’i left office, with several of his former cabinet colleagues attending the ceremony.
