Police Framed Us After Failed Extortion Attempt, Says Nyeri Protester Accused of Theft and Property Damage

Two accused suspects who were on Wednesday arraigned over the alleged theft of goods, unlawful procession and malicious damage to property during last month’s June 25th Gen Z anniversary protests in Nyeri have now claimed that the charges are false and part of a wider scheme to punish and intimidate them.

A Nyeri protester claims police tried to extort them before framing them with theft and damage charges linked to the June 25 Gen Z demonstrations.

Speaking out via social media, Judy King’ori Wangui, one of the accused, insisted that the charges stemmed from their refusal to comply with extortion demands allegedly made by the DCIO at Nyeri Central Police.

She claimed the police turned against them after they informed authorities of their planned peaceful protest, and that the legal action is a deliberate attempt to silence and scare off dissent.

“So according to DCI Nyeri, because my friends and I notified them of our peaceful protest on 25th June, we are the ones who looted and destroyed property. Fuck the police, Ruto and all his minions! The DCIO based at Nyeri Central Police wanted to extort us and when we refused they put these false charges on us. They can look for someone else to intimidate. I might have a cute face and a small body but tutapelekana na wao mpaka tuheshimiane.”

The two were arraigned before the Nyeri Chief Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, where they were formally charged with taking part in an unlawful procession, malicious damage to property at both the Nyeri Police Station and DCI offices, and the theft of goods valued at Ksh 130 million from a Naivas Supermarket branch.

The alleged offences are said to have occurred during the June 25th Gen Z anniversary protests.

The court released each of the accused on a cash bail of Ksh 70,000 or a bond of Ksh 200,000.

The matter is scheduled for mention on July 23, 2025.
