Protests erupted in Nanyuki on Monday, June 1, as residents rejected government plans to establish a proposed Ebola quarantine facility in the area.
Demonstrators marched through parts of the town carrying placards and tree branches, chanting slogans opposing the project. Many said the facility would expose the community to unnecessary health risks and increase the likelihood of a viral outbreak.
Footage showed hundreds of residents blocking roads as they voiced their opposition, with some insisting the project should be abandoned immediately.
“It is the Ebola facility they plan to construct here that we do not want,” one protester said.
Police later engaged the protesters in running battles while attempting to restore order in the town.
