Ambira Boys High School students went on the rampage barely two weeks ago. The boys destroyed some school property after the school administration led by the Principal; one Mr Boaz Addit who's hardly 5 months old in the school; refused to address serious allegations against the School Captain, Allegations against the school captain included homosexuality, sexual abuse and misconduct against other students. The cause of the protests was also attributed to exam mismanagement and drug abuse. The management of the school responded by closing the school indefinitely. Now the school has written to parents claiming the damage caused was KES 50 million and that each student must pay KES 33,000 one-off in the next 7 days to be readmitted. If you assess keenly, the school infrastructure cannot even be worth half that amount. Note that the rioting students did not burn any property; they destroyed windows, broke into the staffroom and destroyed CCTVs but didn't burn a thing. The school has a population of 1800 students and is located in the constituency formerly represented by Petroleum CS Opiyo Wandayi. By asking parents to pay KES 33000, it means the school expects to collect KES 59,400,000. "They think we collect money from where? We are not stupid or naive. This is not happening. When Maranda got burnt a few years ago, parents were asked to pay KES 6,000 per student. Maranda is a much bigger school and had greater damages than Ambira" a parent wondered This trend of principals of public secondary schools exploiting parents must stop. And they do it throughout - whether it's a strike or building so-called multipurpose hall. Whether it is 'development fee' or 'remedial fee'. They sell slots to desperate parents seeking placement for their children and even buy grades from corrupt fellows at KNEC. These principals cannot explain their source of wealth. They own rentals in their localities, roll in 4*4 SUV machines, take their kids to expensive private primary schools before rigging them into national status secondary education. Nearly all Principals will easily fail lifestyle audit if ever they were subjected to one. Whatever is happening in secondary schools is not education because education cannot be steered by corrupt, shameless and immoral herd of people running a school to primarily benefit them. Ambira Boys High Parents have rejected this and are clear they will not accept to be exploited by anyone in the name of students' strike. Instead, the school should be addressing the serious allegations of homosexuality, drug abuse and sodomy which pose a threat to the moral uprightness of their kids. "We will not allow Principal Boaz Addit to run down Ambira the way he did Otieno Oyoo Boys Secondary in Kisumu. Let the investigative arms of Government be involved in the case of Ambira otherwise we will not relent to pursue other means - including going court, to protect ourselves and children from this unfortunate exploitation" another parent said.
