The Government of Cambodia has dismissed viral claims alleging that it ordered all African nationals, including Kenyans, to leave the country by the end of May. The clarification follows reports circulating on social media and some media platforms suggesting that Cambodia’s Immigration Department had issued a directive requiring all Africans to exit the country by May 31, 2026. The alleged fake notice further claimed that any foreign national remaining in Cambodia after June 1 would face arrest, prosecution, and penalties under immigration laws. However, in a statement issued on Friday, May 29, the Cambodian Ministry of Interior’s General Department of Immigration termed the document as entirely false and misleading. Spokesperson Touch Sokhak said the claims were fabricated and had no basis in any official government communication, warning the public against spreading misinformation. “It is fake news fabricated to distort the situation and mislead domestic and international audiences,” he stated. The department further urged citizens and foreign residents to rely only on verified government channels for accurate immigration updates. The viral notice had sparked concern among African nationals living in Cambodia, including students, businesspeople, and workers, prompting fears of possible mass deportations. Authorities have now assured foreign nationals that there is no directive requiring them to leave the country, reaffirming that Cambodia continues to welcome lawful residents and visitors under its immigration framework.
