A Nairobi court was briefly thrown into light moments on Thursday after an American national charged with immigration offences complained about the food served in custody, asking the magistrate for “good food” instead of the standard ugali and cabbage. Hodgkinson Enock Jedidah, who appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Mutai at the Milimani Law Courts, said he was dissatisfied with the meals provided while in remand and urged the court to intervene. “I should be given good food… ugali and cabbage… is that what you are saying should happen?” he told the court, drawing laughter from those in attendance. Jedidah argued that he did not like the meals provided and requested better and larger portions while in custody. However, the magistrate declined to issue any orders on the matter, advising him to accept the food provided in remand as part of standard prison conditions. The American national is facing charges of being in Kenya without valid immigration documents. He denied the charges, claiming that his travel papers had been confiscated by immigration authorities, making it impossible for him to regularise his stay. The prosecution opposed his claims, arguing that he had overstayed his permitted visit and remained in the country unlawfully. The court directed that Jedidah be remanded at Industrial Area Prison pending further proceedings in the case.
