Amnesty International Kenya has appointed George Morara as its new Executive Director, effective June 2, 2026, following a competitive recruitment process launched in February. The announcement coincided with the organisation’s global 65th anniversary celebrations. Morara, a former Vice-Chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), brings over 30 years of experience in governance, public accountability, and human rights advocacy. He succeeds Irũngũ Houghton, who led Amnesty Kenya for eight years and oversaw its transition into a membership-driven organisation. Amnesty Kenya expressed confidence in Morara’s leadership as the organisation continues addressing human rights concerns, including police brutality, freedom of expression, and rising femicide cases.
