A student from Kaimosi Friends University in Vihiga County has raised concerns over a new fee structure introduced by the university management, accusing the institution of imposing unfair charges on students. According to the student, the university recently introduced an additional KSh3,000 charge described as a “transaction fee,” sparking anger among learners, especially those from struggling backgrounds. The student claims the changes were made while some students were away on long holiday and others on industrial attachment, questioning the timing and transparency of the decision. “We are wondering which university in Kenya charges such a huge transaction fee. This is becoming an extra burden to students and parents already struggling with high education costs,” the student stated. The student further accused the university administration, led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Peter N. Mwita, of allegedly using the new fee structure to exploit students. Learners are now calling on the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), the Ministry of Education, and other relevant authorities to investigate the matter and provide clarity on the legality of the charges.
