Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has named Nyandarua Senator John Methu as the Democracy for the Citizen's Party (DCP)'s new Secretary General. Gachagua made the declaration on Monday, May 25, during a press conference at his party headquarters in Nairobi, effectively taking out Hezron Obaga from the role. According to Gachagua, Methu will be tasked with leading the party's campaigns, including spearheading DCP's agenda ahead of the Ol Kalou by-elections, which have been slated for July 16. "The media must know who to contact. Senator John Methu is a DCP party member, and he will start acting as the Secretary General designate and the spokesperson of DCP on all matters from today," Gachagua announced. Obaga and Methu collage side-by-side images of Hezbon Obaga and Senator John Methu Photo Gachagua went on, "In the fullness of time, his name will be forwarded to the registrar of political parties so that he is registered as the duly appointed SG of DCP. The decision, according to Gachagua, followed a meeting of the party's National Executive Committee (NEC), which resolved to appoint Methu. Gachagua, however, did not lay bare the reasons why Obaga, a founding member of the party, was removed from his position as the party's spokesperson. Obaga became DCP Secretary General in May 2025 when the party was formed and has served for over a year before his removal. The DCP party was officially announced in May 2025 and has been in existence for 1 year. According to Gachagua, the party has over 4 million members, with over 10,000 aspirants expressing interest in vying for various positions in the 2027 elections. "Thousands of aspirants have shown interest and registered with the party with the intention of flying the party's flag in the next general elections, and we want to assure all aspirants of free and fair nominations," Gachagua said. Following his appointment, Methu was tasked with delivering the Ol Kalou parliamentary seat by-election to DCP, with Gachagua confirming the senator will lead the campaign in the constituency. The Nyandarua Senator has also been tasked with recruiting 10 million Kenyans as members of the DCP ahead of the 2027 polls. "NEC has given Senator Methu that he, together with other leaders, to take charge of the by-elections in Ol Kalau and deliver a decisive victory to the DCP party in the elections scheduled for July 16," he added. However, Methu's appointment as the DCP SG could face legal constraints as he was elected on a UDA ticket. Gachagua, in readiness, revealed that DCP lawyers were working on any legal proceedings that may arise. In defense, Methu, while accepting the role, referenced a similar situation in 2022 when President William Ruto became the UDA party leader while he was still a member of the Jubilee party.
