Rising tomato and onion prices are piling pressure on household budgets across Kenya, with consumers in Nairobi and other urban areas cutting food portions, reducing purchases and changing shopping habits as the cost of essential cooking ingredients continues to surge.

Traders say wholesale tomato prices have more than doubled in recent weeks while onion prices have also risen sharply, pushing up the cost of basic meals and straining both households and small-scale food vendors across several markets.
