KURA boss Silas Kinoti: His agency has once again been accused of incompetence in handling the city's roads Netizens are up in arms against the Kenyan Urban Roads Authority (KURA) due to some of their shocking engineering concepts within the city. On Monday, 22 November 2021, a section of Kenyans on social media blamed the agency for hiring incompetent contractors who fail to factor in the presence of pedestrians and cyclists when designing crucial roads. The morning outrage was sparked by a specific post that highlighted one of the many skewed road sections in Nairobi. The attached images showed part of an improperly constricted carriageway that left no space for pedestrians, cyclists or persons with special needs. Visibility at the sharp corner that goes through a tunnel is also extremely poor, which greatly increases the risk of speeding drivers running onto passersby. "Dear KURA, designing streets solely for automobiles is based on obsolete thinking and driven by archaic engineering concepts," the Kenyan wrote. "Safe Mobility is a Human Right," the tweep added in another post. The section is clearly a disaster in waiting. This tweet once again badly exposed KURA's incapacity to handle its mandate and this left angry netizens on the platform with a lot to say. "Is it possible we have zombies in the name of engineers in these road agencies?" one Kenyan asked. "It is only here in Kenya where you have contractors whose sole qualifications ni driving course," another replied. The latest episode adds to the turmoil surrounding KURA in the recent past. From, sex for favours, rampant corruption and nepotism, and now on top of it all, crystal clear ineptness in delivering their mandate.

With such cases being reported every other day, pedestrians and cyclists within the city and its environs continue to wonder how long they will have to keep burying innocent kin whose lives are lost partly due to KURA's incompetence. Must the greed of a few crooked thugs in government agencies like KURA prevent us from achieving practical and functional tax-payer funded systems like safe roads and highways? When will enough be enough?
