Published on April 25, 2020, Kenya's ambassador to China, Sarah Serem, has spoken out against reports that Kenyans are sleeping on the streets in China.

Speaking to NTV, Ambassador Serem stated that the pictures and videos circulating online are likely of Africans from other countries, and not Kenyans.

"I want to tell you I have also been seeing the same on social media and I am more concerned with my Kenyans so, I checked to see if any of my Kenyans are the ones appearing on social media and on the scripts we have seen going round," Ambassador Serem said.

She added that while some of the pictures may be current cases, they are not of Kenyans.

The ambassador also addressed the issue of the government evacuating Kenyans from China, stating that the matter is still under discussion and that preparations are being made for those who do not have travel papers.

However, Kenyans will still have to pay for their own flight tickets.

"Majority of our diasporas are students, and these are students who are ongoing with classes. And so the majority of those who are legally here have absolutely no reason to go back home," explained ambassador Serem.
