Heavy rainfall is expected to pound Muranga County in the coming days, prompting the county meteorological department to issue a warning to local residents.

According to Mr. Paul Murage, the county meteorological director, many parts of the county will receive more than 100 millimeters of rain over the weekend, which is a significant amount for the steep terrains and may lead to landslides.

Speaking to KNA on Wednesday, Murage noted that the soils in the area are already fully saturated due to the lack of a dry spell since October last year, and further rainfall may trigger landslides in sloppy areas.

“Since October last year, there has been no dry spell in Murang’a County so soils are saturated and with ongoing rains, some areas may be hit by landslides,” stated Murage.

Since last week, four landslides have been reported in different parts of the county, leading to destruction of property.

Residents living in landslide-prone areas are advised to be extra careful and move to safer places, as the rains are expected to continue up to the end of May.

However, there is a challenge in relocating people due to the threat of Covid-19, and the director has appealed to residents to be extra careful when it comes to shifting people faced with the threat of landslides.
