Heavy rains and flooding have claimed the lives of three children in Kericho County, Kenya.
According to police officers and villagers, the mudslides occurred between 7pm and 9pm on Monday in Kiptenden village, Kunyak Ward, and Nyagasakia village, Kamasian Ward, Kipkelion West Constituency.
A police officer, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that two of the victims were seven years old and the other was three years old.
As of Tuesday, only one of the bodies had been retrieved from the mud and taken to Kericho County Referral Hospital mortuary.
Multiple villages, including Kabirong, Ngebebo, Kiptenden, and Nyagisakia, in Kunyak and Kamasian wards, have been severely affected by the rains.
Displaced villagers spent Monday night in schools, seeking shelter after their homes were destroyed.
Livestock were buried, and property of unknown value was destroyed.
Kericho County Commissioner Moses Mbaruku stated that personnel were headed to the locations for an assessment, adding that he would issue a statement later.
