As I reflect on my experience in quarantine, I am reminded of the challenges that come with being confined in a small space with over 140 people.
The rules were clear: maintain social distance, practice personal hygiene, and exercise self-discipline. However, by the end of the first week, these rules seemed impossible to follow.
With limited resources and a confined space, survival became the top priority. Keeping a one-meter distance was difficult, and breaking it meant punishment. The lack of soap, sanitizers, and other essential items made personal hygiene a significant challenge.
As a high-risk arrival, I was not prepared for life in quarantine. I had escaped the chaos of Madrid, but I didn't plan for the 14-day quarantine. The situation was dire, and we had to find ways to survive and remain sane.
The cleaners were the unsung heroes of our quarantine experience. They were kind and willing to help, but they had to be bribed with M-Pesa to provide us with essential items. It was a system that worked, but it was not ideal.
As I navigated the challenges of quarantine, I realized that life is unpredictable and can change in an instant. I was grateful for the kindness of the cleaners and the mercy of God, which endured forever.
My experience in quarantine was a reminder that even in the most difficult situations, there is always hope. I was determined to earn my certificate after the 14 days and get a clean bill of health. It was a goal that seemed achievable, but it was not easy.
Many of my fellow quarantined individuals had similar stories of struggle and hardship. They had paid exorbitant amounts for their tickets to come home and were now facing an uncertain future. Their mental anguish was palpable, and it was clear that they needed support and care.
As I looked around at the faces of my fellow quarantined individuals, I wondered how we would keep social distance when we were all in the same space. It was a question that seemed impossible to answer, but we had to find a way to make it work.
My experience in quarantine was a challenging and eye-opening experience. It taught me the importance of kindness, mercy, and hope in the face of adversity.
