Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi has denied bribery allegations, claiming some suspended officers had bribed MCAs to influence their return to office.
Elachi made the remarks during a special sitting convened by MCAs to discuss county matters following Governor Mike Sonko's prosecution last month.
She accused an MCA, a former chairman of a House committee, of being behind the allegations and urged him to provide evidence to relevant state agencies.
Elachi noted that MCAs were exercising their mandate to legislate for the county government and to exercise oversight over the county executive committee and its organs.
However, some MCAs, led by Imara Daima MCA Kennedy Obuya, disputed Elachi's statement, claiming it was 'rushed' and that they had warned her against making the pronouncement.
Obuya also claimed that they had advised Elachi to wait before making the pronouncement.
Another camp, led by Majority Leader Charles Thuo, clarified that members were calling for the reinstatement of only those suspended officials who did not have court cases.
