January 14, 2020, marked a significant day for education in Nakuru County, as several school principals were transferred to new institutions. The transfers, which have left many in the education sector reeling, have seen some principals moving to new schools within the same county.
Among those affected is Fredrick Mbuthia, the former principal of Afraha Secondary School in Nakuru County, who has been transferred to Trans Nzoia's Goseta School. Mbuthia's transfer is just one of many that have taken place in recent weeks, with several other principals also being moved to new schools.
Philip Okinyi, the principal of Nakuru West Secondary School, was transferred to Milimani Mixed in the same county. Jacob Odera, the principal of Kenyatta Secondary, was shunted to Lake Solai Secondary in the same county. Mwai Kirimi, the principal of Nairobi Road Secondary, found himself at Elburgon DEB, while Samuel Kamunge, the principal of Nakuru Central, was moved to Teret Secondary.
Other principals who have been transferred include Amos Gamba, who is now heading Naivasha Day, having previously been the principal of Uhuru Secondary. William Rono is now the principal of DEB Nutwot Uasin Gishu, having previously been at Mwariki. Reuben Ochako has been transferred to Kieni from Mama Ngina, Nakuru County, while William Tuitoek moves to Chemasis to Masaita Mixed, Njuguna Jonathan from Banita to Mohotetu Laikipia.
The transfers have not only affected principals but also teachers. Rose Kirui, a teacher at Athinai, has moved to Chemasis, while Wairimu Kamau from Rongai Mixed has been transferred to St Veronica Siritanyi, and Lydia Kipchumba, formerly at Masaita mixed, has moved to Banita.
TSC CEO Nancy Macharia has overseen the transfers, which have left many in the education sector wondering about the reasons behind the changes.
