On the first day of the 2020 academic year, a tragic incident occurred at Randani Primary School in Kenyenya, Kisii County. A 13-year-old Class Eight pupil, Wesley Obare, died after being accidentally cut by a panga while playing with his classmate.
According to Sub County police boss Philip Oyugi, the two minors were playing in the school ground when the incident occurred. Oyugi stated that Wesley Obare was cut on his right thigh and died due to excessive bleeding.
The pupil was left lying at the scene within the school compound for a long time as teachers were held up in a staff meeting. The deceased's parents, Simon Obare and Mirriam Kerubo, have recorded statements with the investigating officers.
Wesley Obare's aunt, Gladys Ondara, expressed her sadness over the loss and called for justice and speedy investigations by relevant government agencies. She stated, "We are saddened with the loss but all we ask for is justice and speedy investigations by relevant Government agencies."
The incident has sparked an investigation by the police, led by Oyugi. The police are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
