January 6, 2020, marked a day of desperation for a young boy in Itare village, Kisii County. The 10-year-old boy, who wishes to remain anonymous, took drastic measures to avoid ridicule from his peers who had undergone circumcision during the December holiday.
According to reports, the boy's parents were unable to raise the Sh1,000 needed for a professional circumcision procedure, forcing their son to resort to a kitchen knife. The incident occurred about a month ago, and the boy's condition has since worsened.
Speaking to journalists, the boy revealed that he had performed the procedure to avoid ridicule from his peers. He used a kitchen knife to circumcise himself, a move that has left him with severe injuries.
After seeking treatment at a local dispensary, the boy was referred to Kisii County Referral Hospital. However, his parents could not afford the fees, and they took him back home.
The boy's condition has left him unable to return to school on time as he heals from his injuries.
