As we begin a new year, many golfers set ambitious goals for themselves. But what does it take to achieve these goals and improve your game?
According to Charles Gacheru, a seasoned golfer, lowering your handicap can be a battle of mind over matter. He suggests that amateur golfers often have an inflated opinion of their skills, which can lead to poor decision-making on the course.
Gacheru recommends that mid-handicap golfers aim to lower their handicap by two strokes in 2020. To achieve this, he suggests playing more conservatively on the long par-4s and accepting that bogey is a good score. On the par-5s, golfers should aim to get on the green in regulation, rather than trying to muscle the ball.
For high-handicap golfers, Gacheru suggests shaving their handicap by up to four strokes. This can be achieved by stopping attempts at flop shots, getting rid of the lobe wedge, and using the 3-wood more. Golfers should also club up on their approach shots and swing easier.
Consistent practice is key to improving your game, and Gacheru emphasizes the importance of spending time on the range and seeking feedback from better players, caddies, or golf professionals. He also recommends buying a new glove and changing or cleaning the grips of your clubs.
Finally, Gacheru suggests that golfers aim to play faster rounds in 2020, with four-hour rounds being the norm. This can be achieved by taking fewer minutes to study each shot and being more decisive on the course.
