On June 21, 2021, a group of angry Nairobi residents took matters into their own hands by vandalizing a Noah vehicle that was allegedly being used by con men in the city's central business district.
The vehicle, which was parked next to the Archives building, was reportedly being used by individuals posing as promoters of corporate brands to lure unsuspecting victims into parting with their money.
According to one victim, the scammers would offer free merchandise, only to later ask for money in exchange for a chance to win more prizes. Once the victim paid, they would be told that their bet had failed and they could not redeem their money.
Police were forced to intervene to protect the vehicle from further damage, but not before the con men's vehicle had suffered significant damage, including broken side mirrors and vandalized windows.
The incident highlights the growing concern among Kenyans about the prevalence of fake promoters in the CBD, who continue to steal from unsuspecting victims despite warnings from authorities, including the DCI.
