On Thursday, a joint operation by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the Police in Malindi resulted in the impounding of 22 motor vehicles along the Malindi-Mombasa highway.

The operation, which is being carried out countrywide, aims to enforce compliance with safety rules among vehicle owners and drivers.

Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Anthony Kamitu and Head of Licensing NTSA Lt. Colonel (Rtd) Hared Adan led the operation, which also resulted in the arrest of a tour driver found to be drunk.

According to Kamitu, most of the vehicles impounded were Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) that had tampered with their speed governors, while others were defective or driven by unlicensed drivers.

"Many Kenyans are complying with the rules, even many of the vehicles carrying passengers are compliant," Kamitu said.

Adan emphasized the importance of ensuring that vehicles are duly licensed and that speed governors are not tampered with. He also advised PSV operators to establish control rooms to monitor the speed of their vehicles and ensure compliance.

"If that will be viewed as an inconvenience, then let it be so. We want everybody to take responsibility in terms of road safety," Adan said.
