Chiefs in Kakamega County are seeking a risk allowance to motivate them, citing exposure to dangers while dealing with criminals.

During their annual general meeting in Kakamega, the chiefs expressed their concerns, stating that they were exposed to many dangers and therefore deserved such allowances.

Walter Mukunga, a chief in Kisa East, highlighted the risks they face, saying, “We are exposed to all sorts of dangers while dealing with criminals. In Lamu, a chief and his assistant were killed while on duty.”

Benjamin Washiali, the Majority Whip in the National Assembly, has backed the chiefs' demands, stating, “I'll engage House Administration and National Security Committee chair Paul Koinange on the possibility of introducing monthly risk allowance for chiefs and their assistants.”

Notably, in June 2016, then Butere Deputy County Commissioner Jack Obuo urged the government to allow chiefs to be armed.
