Published on December 24, 2019, the standoff between the Kisumu County government and striking doctors has reached a critical point, with the county threatening to sack medical staff if they fail to return to work.
According to County Health Executive Judith Atyang', the county has prepared promotion letters for the doctors, but they have refused to pick them up, citing unresolved issues over promotions as one of the reasons for their prolonged strike.
With about 128 doctors on strike, the county's health sector is struggling to provide adequate care to patients, and the situation is likely to worsen if the doctors are sacked.
The County Governments Act, 2012, requires County Public Service Boards to advertise positions, shortlist, and conduct interviews before appointing staff, but the doctors have refused to bow to pressure from the county government and have vowed to return to work only after their collective bargain agreement is implemented.
