On December 23, 2019, Kenya Railways Corporation announced the suspension of Nairobi commuter train services from December 24 to January 6, citing low demand.

The decision affects trains plying Ruiru, Embakasi, Kikuyu, and Syokimau routes, which were popular among commuters due to their affordability, with fares ranging from Sh40 to Sh60 per trip.

However, the link train operating between Nairobi Central Station and Nairobi SGR terminus will continue to run throughout the holiday period.

Acting Corporate Affairs Manager Margaret Kawira attributed the suspension to the reduced number of commuters during the holiday season, stating, "It's a holiday season and, therefore, the number of commuters travelling to town and back has gone down. This informed the reason behind suspending the service until January 6."

Mr. William Ojwang, a frequent user of the Embakasi train, expressed understanding for the decision, saying, "We do not oppose the move. All we are saying is that we need to be notified in time so that we can plan our travels."
