On December 23, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga extended the mandate of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) taskforce, led by Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji, to guide the next phase of the process.
The 14-member team has been mandated to structure the recommendations into implementable action plans that may result in a referendum.
Supporting the extension, the Economic Freedom Party (EFP) stated that it will provide time for Kenyans to fine-tune the proposals contained in the document launched at Bomas of Kenya last month.
According to EFP's national chairman, Isaak Abey, the extension is a 'best end of year present Kenyans would wish for,' as it facilitates public participation and promotes inclusivity.
Abey emphasized the need for an Executive structure that promotes inclusivity without burdening taxpayers, citing the region's negotiated democracy deployed in Mandera in the run-up to the 2017 polls.
Another EFP official, Huseein Abshiro, stated that the country needs a system that will accommodate all regions, supporting the proposed Executive structure with a President, Deputy President, Prime Minister, and Cabinet Ministers appointed from among MPs and outside Parliament.
