Meru town has a new hotspot for second-hand clothes enthusiasts, and it's not the dusty Gakoromone market. Think Twice, a second-hand store that opened its doors in Meru this year, has been luring customers away from the traditional market.

Manager Georgina Gattwiri said the business is booming, with trendy women's dresses selling for between Sh200 and Sh500, and men's trousers available for Sh300. The store's affordable prices and convenient location have made it a favorite among locals.

Linda Ruteere, who runs the Diligent Spa in Meru town, said she prefers shopping at Think Twice over Gakoromone market, where she finds the mud and dust unbearable. 'When it rains or it's dusty, there is no fun in visiting Gakoromone market,' she said. 'I would rather shop indoors, where I get what I want at prices that are almost the same.'

Some second-hand clothes sellers at Gakoromone market, like Joyce Muriuki, have started buying in wholesale at Think Twice, citing reduced costs and easier access to supplies. However, not all traders are happy with the new competition, with Benard Kimathi arguing that the 'playing field' is not level due to Think Twice's prime location.

According to Georgina Gattwiri, the store's success is due to its ability to meet the demand for affordable clothes while making prices accessible to families and individuals. 'Business is good and getting better,' she said. 'We are happy with the numbers, though we would like to see more people streaming in.'

As Think Twice continues to thrive, it remains to be seen how the traditional Gakoromone market will adapt to the changing landscape.
