The Uriri Open Youth tournament is a significant event aimed at developing grassroots football and nurturing talents in rural areas. The tournament is set to kick off on Sunday at St Joseph Rapogi High School in Migori County.

According to tournament director Dan Ocholla, the event has attracted teams from Homa Bay, Suna East, Awendo, Rongo, and Uriri. The tournament aims to provide a platform for young talented players to showcase their skills and potentially secure sports scholarships to attend secondary schools and colleges.

Winners of the Under-15 category will take home a trophy and Sh50,000, while the Under-13 category will receive Sh40,000. Other awards include certificates, jerseys for finalists, and balls for every team.

Speaking to the Standard Sports, Ocholla emphasized the importance of the tournament in addressing local community problems such as crime, drug abuse, and socio-economic issues. He also called upon coaches, scouts, and stakeholders to attend the event to identify talented young players.

Some of the participating teams include Manyatta U13, Zyntac U13, Pace Setters U13, BYFA U13, Oyugis United U13, MOSFA U13, Zyntac U15, and Obungo U15, among others.

Regional leaders, the county, and well-wishers are encouraged to support this noble initiative. The tournament is a drug-free event, and the consumption of alcohol or any form of drug is strictly prohibited.
