George Mng'ong'o, a renowned rugby player and founder member of Mwamba Rugby Football Club, passed away on December 9, 2019, due to an asthmatic attack and cardiac arrest, a postmortem carried out on Monday at the Chiromo mortuary revealed.
According to a close family member, Mng'ong'o had gone 'off air' for about 10 days, with his last WhatsApp activity recorded on November 22 at 11pm. However, he neither answered calls nor replied to text messages sent to his inbox during this period.
It was not until Sunday that his brother, Samuel Goba, accompanied by police, went to his house in South B Riverside estate in Nairobi, only to find the house locked. The police were forced to open the door to his bedroom, where they found his lifeless body.
Mng'ong'o was one of the founder members of Mwamba RFC, a top-flight rugby club in Kenya. He featured for the Kenya Cup side as a scrum-half.
His former club mourned him in a brief message posted on their Facebook page on Tuesday, December 10.
"We regret to announce the passing of founder Mwamba Scrum Half, George Mng'ong'o," the post read.
Burial arrangements are underway at his home in Mazeras, Mombasa County. The body will leave Nairobi on December 20 for a burial ceremony set for December 21.
