On December 7, 2019, the family of Joyce Syombua and her two children, Shanice Maua and Prince Michael, laid them to rest in Kyaithani village, Kitui, after a long and emotional journey.
As the family and friends mourned the loss of their loved ones, they also called for justice for the brutal murder of Joyce and her children.
Denis Kiliki, the family spokesman, urged the government to take action and ensure that Major Peter Mugure, the main suspect in the murder case, is brought to justice.
"The actions taken against Joyce and her children were heinous...we urge the government to expedite the investigation and ensure that justice is served," Kiliki said.
Meanwhile, Major Peter Mugure, the main suspect in the murder case, will remain in custody at King'ong'o Maximum Prison after a Nyeri High Court Judge, Justice Jarus Ngaa, denied his release.
The judge ordered that Mugure be taken for a psychiatric test at the Nyeri Referral Hospital and deferred his plea taking for two weeks, with the new date set for December 17, 2019.
Major Mugure is accused of killing his estranged partner Joyce Syombua and their two children, who were reported missing three weeks before their bodies were discovered.
Postmortem results showed that Joyce died as a result of multiple blows to the head while her two children were strangled.
