As a writer, I've had my fair share of media interviews. But have you ever wondered how to make these interviews work for you? For business owners, being featured in a national newspaper can be a game-changer, but it requires more than just a grainy selfie on WhatsApp.

When I call a business owner to invite them for an interview, I make sure to 'gas them up' first. I'll say something like, 'My goodness! Your work is so creative, so visionary!' This helps put them at ease and makes them more receptive to the interview.

Once we're on the phone, I'll ask them about their business and their story. I'll egg them on with my genuine mix of amazement and curiosity. 'You're crazy! What did you know about tailoring clothes for preteen boys?' This helps keep the conversation flowing and makes the interview more enjoyable.

But what happens after the interview? That's where a press kit comes in. A press kit is like a resume for you and your brand. It should include information about your business, your products, and your contact details. It should also include professionally done photographs that showcase your brand and products.

Having a press kit is essential because it helps you look professional and prepared. It's not just about having a few photos and some information about your business. It's about telling your story and showcasing your brand in the best possible light.

So, how do you make media interviews work for you? First, be prepared. Have a press kit ready that showcases your brand and products. Second, be professional. Don't send a grainy selfie on WhatsApp. Take the feature seriously and make sure your press kit is up to date. Finally, be yourself. Don't try to be someone you're not. Be natural and authentic, and you'll be sure to make a great impression.
