On October 5, 2021, Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu Hassan made a bold decision to reduce taxes on fuel, a move aimed at preventing fuel price hikes that would hurt Tanzanians.
According to a Press Statement issued by the Directorate of Presidential Communication Unit, the President ordered a reduction of taxes imposed on fuel totaling Tsh102 billion ($44.2 million) annually.
This reduction will effectively lower costs passed on to consumers, making life easier for the people of Tanzania.
President Samia made the directive after receiving an implementation report from Energy Minister January Makamba and holding a meeting in Dodoma with the Attorney General and Ministers of Energy, Works and Transport, Industry and Trade, Local government and Regional Administration.
The institutions directly concerned with the reductions of such taxes are the Energy and Water Utility Regulatory Authority (EWURA), Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS), and Weighty and Measures Agency (WMA).
