Dr. Margaret Nyakang'o has been appointed as the new Controller of Budget, marking a significant change in the country's financial management.
On Wednesday, she was sworn in by Chief Justice David Maraga at the Supreme Court building, hours after being approved by the Parliamentary Finance Committee.
Dr. Nyakang'o's appointment follows her nomination by President Uhuru Kenyatta on November 19, 2019, after the term of the former Controller of Budget, Agnes Odhiambo, ended in August.
She emerged as the best candidate out of 15 applicants, including Stephen Masha, the current acting Controller of Budget.
As the new Controller of Budget, Dr. Nyakang'o has been tasked with prioritizing the scrutiny of pending bills of 15 counties censored by the treasury before the counties can access their allocations to enhance accountability.
Dr. Nyakang'o brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as a Director at the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics.
