On November 28, 2019, Mt Kenya Council of Elders threw its weight behind Mwangi Kiunjuri, the current Agriculture Cabinet Secretary, as a potential running mate for Deputy President William Ruto.
The council's chairman, Paul Mwati, cited Kiunjuri's extensive experience in politics, which began in 1997 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Laikipia East at the age of 30.
According to Mwati, Kiunjuri has made a name for himself in Kenya's political landscape as a fearless and candid politician, and is well-suited to be Ruto's running mate.
Mwati also advised President Uhuru Kenyatta to consider grooming a spokesman for the Mt Kenya communities, with Kiunjuri being the top candidate due to his leadership and experience.
Failure to do so, Mwati warned, may leave the communities in a 'political orphanage' after the 2022 transitional election.
