On July 12, 2021, the long-awaited trial of Migori Governor Okoth Obado, accused of murdering his lover Sharon Otieno and her unborn child, finally commenced at the Milimani High Court in Nairobi.
The trial began with the testimony of government pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor, who painted a grim picture of the tragic events surrounding Sharon Otieno's death.
Dr Oduor revealed that Sharon Otieno sustained at least seven stab wounds and two slash wounds on different parts of her body, including her back, neck, upper chest, shoulder, flank, and upper and lower limbs.
He further described the stab wounds, stating that there were intestines sticking out from a wound in the lower abdomen and two parallel slash wounds on the left ear.
Dr Oduor also noted that Sharon's body had muscle bleeding on the left side of the neck and muscle was detached from the attachment on the bone, as well as bleeding on the root of the tongue and a collapsed right lung.
The pathologist further described the body as 'flaccid, with skin peeling off the body on the back of the arms and legs, it was discoloured, with a height of 175cm and was healthy.'
Additionally, Dr Oduor revealed that Sharon's body had a 28-week-old fetus that died from a sharp abdominal trauma caused by a stab wound inflicted on her mother's left upper part of the uterus.
He concluded that the cause of Sharon's death was severe haemorrhage due to penetrating force trauma and also manual strangulation.
The trial continues with further testimony and evidence.
