On November 19, 2019, the University of Nairobi Council made a crucial decision that would affect the institution's operations. The Council has since scrapped the Centre for Self-Sponsored Programmes (CESSP), an agency in charge of self-sponsored programmes at the university.

According to a letter released by the Council Chair, Prof. Julia Ojiambo, on Monday, the decision was made after a meeting in which the establishment and functions of CESSP were deliberated. Prof. Ojiambo stated that the Council resolved to revoke Statute XXXV under which CESSP is established, noting that the decision 'does not, in any way, hamper the operations of the university.'

Prof. Ojiambo further stated that all staff under CESSP will be humanely re-deployed into the mainstream services of the University and be assigned duties and responsibilities in line with their training. The Council boss also stated that banking facilities designated to the programme shall continue to be operated by duly recognized signatories, and all activities previously under the programme will also be re-designated to other organs of the institution.

Prof. Ojiambo reassured the university fraternity that university functions and all her services will continue to be discharged seamlessly. The decision is part of austerity measures aimed at streamlining the university's operations.
