On June 26, 2020, Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha revealed plans to reopen Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions in September for the administration of exams.

Speaking after a meeting with TVET principals in Kisumu, Prof Magoha emphasized the importance of thorough assessments to ensure the institutions are prepared to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

He noted that TVET institutions are better equipped to implement social distancing measures, allowing students to attend lessons in shifts while adhering to the guidelines.

"If the PS and his team inspect the institutions and confirm that they comply with COVID-19 requirements, that class can be allowed to come in and do examinations," Prof Magoha said.

He also directed the principals to obtain physicians from the Ministry of Health to educate them on the necessary protocols to combat the pandemic.

Prof Magoha acknowledged that social distancing may pose a challenge in pre-primary, primary, and secondary schools, but the government remains committed to its plans for reopening.
