On November 25, 2019, police in Nairobi's Ruaka estate rescued 10 girls, including a 14-year-old Form Two student from Kiambu County, from a brothel that had been operating for over a year.
The girl had gone missing two months prior, lured by a friend who promised her a lucrative job as a masseuse, but she was instead introduced to prostitution and forced to earn between Sh5,000 and Sh10,000 a day.
Investigations revealed that the brothel was owned by a group of prominent individuals, including a former Cabinet Secretary, and that the girl was one of several minors being exploited for sex.
According to The Standard, the girl told investigators that she would entertain up to 10 men a day and sometimes visit clients' homes for a night of pleasure, with her employer providing transport using a personal car.
During the raid, detectives recovered sex toys and condoms, and arrested three suspects, including a 44-year-old man believed to be the brothel manager, who denied charges of sexual offenses and were released on a Sh1 million cash bail each.
