Published on November 21, 2019, Peter Oloo Aringo's son, a former addict, has shared his harrowing story of how his life spiralled out of control due to his addiction to alcohol and drugs.
Aringo, the first-born son of former Alego MP and Education Minister Peter Oloo Aringo, attended the prestigious Consolata Primary School in Nairobi before proceeding to St. Mary's Yala, where he developed a habit of alcohol drinking.
After completing his high school studies in Kenya, he moved to the United States to pursue a business administration course at Lona College in New York. However, his penchant for alcohol soon grew, and he became a drug dealer to make more money.
"I became a dealer. I decided if I want to make more and use more, I needed to get into the business. And that's where my downward spiral began," Aringo said during a recent interview with KTN News.
His involvement in criminal activities put him on the radar of government authorities, and he was eventually apprehended, arraigned in court, and found guilty of drug-related charges. He was given a 30-year prison sentence but opted for deportation instead.
Upon returning to Kenya, Aringo found himself with nothing, and his struggle with addiction continued. He could only afford cheap liquor, which eventually led to him being diagnosed with throat cancer.
"The day we started noticing a swelling on his neck, we thought it was a sore throat. We never thought it would be cancer," his wife Catherine Boyane, also a reformed drug addict, said.
Today, the couple lives in a shanty in a posh estate in Nakuru, a stark contrast to the luxury they once knew.
