On November 20, 2019, Nairobi chief magistrate Francis Andayi granted liquor billionaire Humphrey Kariuki permission to travel abroad for 15 days to attend to his overseas businesses.
The condition for his travel was that his lawyers would file an itinerary of his trips to keep track of his movement.
Mr. Kariuki, the proprietor of Africa Spirits Limited (ASL) and Wow Beverages Limited, is facing a Sh41 billion tax evasion case and has denied the charges.
According to his lawyer Cecil Miller, Mr. Kariuki is a law-abiding citizen who is keen to observe the bail conditions set by the court.
Mr. Andayi stated that the purpose of depositing the passport in court by the accused is to ensure his movement is monitored during the pendency of the criminal case against him.
The case will be mentioned on December 16, 2019, for further directions.
