Rwanda Suspends Kenyan-Made Paracetamol Drug Over Quality Issues ¶
On November 21, 2019, Rwanda's Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) suspended a Kenyan-made paracetamol drug, Totomol 120mg/5ml, due to quality issues.
The drug was found to contain particulate matter, which is a serious quality issue that requires cautious investigation.
The FDA ordered concerned authorities to recall the stock within five days and instructed health institutions in possession of the breached batch to stop distribution, dispensing, and return the drug to their suppliers.
Additionally, the FDA instructed all importers to provide a report on the quantities imported, distributed, returned, and stock on hand within five calendar days.
According to a pharmacist at Pharmacie Conseil in Kigali, Julio Marios Musangwa, having crystals in a drug may mean that it has impurities, which can harm human cells.
The incident follows a recent recall of different foodstuffs made in Kenya from the Rwandan market on recommendation from their counterparts; the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).
