Nairobi Hospital has been at the center of a leadership crisis, with the board replacing John Simba with Joseph Kigwe as chairman on November 20, 2019.

The move comes after a prolonged period of wrangling over the hospital's multi-billion shilling expansion works, which include the construction of a 12-storey building, a convention centre with a 400-seat auditorium, and one of the region's biggest laundry facilities.

According to a notice by the Kenya Hospitals Association (KHA), which owns the hospital, Dr Simba had retired. However, sources close to the matter claim that he was pushed out by his fellow board members following a series of battles to control the hospital over several months.

Dr Simba had been at the helm of the hospital's board since the leadership crisis began, but his tenure was marked by controversy, including the firing of CEO Gordon Odundo and the sacking of the entire board on May 15.

Dr Simba had taken the new board to court to prevent them from taking control of the hospital, but the move ultimately proved unsuccessful.

The hospital, which makes over Sh1.5 billion in annual profits and generates sales in excess of Sh10 billion, has been at the center of a heated debate over its expansion plans.
