Laikipia woman representative Cate Waruguru has sparked controversy with her derogatory remarks against Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru, a supporter of the Uhuru-Raila handshake.

Waruguru, a vocal member of Team Tanga Tanga, made the comments during a political rally in support of William Ruto's 2022 presidential bid.

Speaking at the rally, Waruguru mocked Waiguru, saying she should focus on getting pregnant first following her recent wedding, implying that Waiguru's priority was not her constituents but the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).

“Iko kamama kengine hapa kameolewa juzi. Hata tumbo ya kwanza hajatupatia mtoto lakini anafikiria ile kitu kubwa atazaa ati ni kutuzalia BBI” (There is this lady who got married the other day. We are yet to see a child after her marriage yet she thinks the greatest thing she can give birth to is BBI),” Waruguru said.

Waiguru, 50, has three sons from her previous marriage and recently tied the knot with Kamotho Waiganjo on July 13 this year. The wedding was attended by several dignitaries, including Uhuru Kenyatta.

Waruguru's comments have been met with criticism from many, who argue that politicians, especially women, should not drag their opponents' personal lives into politics.
