November marks Epilepsy Awareness Month, a global campaign that has been celebrated since 1969 in the US. As Kenyans, we can use this time to support the campaign and raise awareness about epilepsy, a neurological disease that affects approximately one million people in our country.
According to the Epilepsy Foundation, one in 26 people will suffer from epilepsy in their lifetime. However, despite its prevalence, there is a lack of information about the disease, including its signs and symptoms, treatment, and management.
Early diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve the lives of people with epilepsy, reducing the chances of seizures and their effects. It can also help prevent sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP).
So, how can you get involved? Wearing purple, the official colour of Epilepsy Awareness Month, is a simple way to show your support. You can also search for the #EpilepsyAwarenessMonth hashtag to learn more about the campaign and any related events.
