On April 23, 2020, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) announced that two police officers would face murder charges for the deaths of Jacob Mbai and Elizabeth Nduku in Mlolongo, Machakos County.

According to IPOA, the two officers, Sergeant Fredrick Leliman and Chief Inspector Stephen Lelei, fatally shot Mbai and Nduku, then falsified a report claiming they were responding to a robbery.

Following an investigation by IPOA and a review of the report by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), the two officers will face murder charges.

It is alleged that Leliman wanted Mbai executed because he had instituted charges against him over an alleged shooting.

Meanwhile, Leliman is already facing charges for the murder of lawyer Willie Kimani, his client Josephat Mwenda, and a taxi driver Joseph Muiruri in June 2016.

Police officers have been under scrutiny for extrajudicial killings in recent times, with at least six Kenyans dying from police brutality since the beginning of the dawn to dusk curfew.
