President Uhuru Kenyatta's efforts to unite the Mt Kenya region have hit a snag, with his allies in the region rebelling against him. The Sagana meeting, where Uhuru summoned all Mt Kenya leaders to rally behind his agenda, seems to have borne little fruit.
DP William Ruto's allies, who were sidelined at the meeting, have vowed to fight those who are bringing friction in the ruling party. They claim Uhuru used non-elected leaders to undermine them, giving 'key roles' to 'political rejects'.
MP Kimani Ngunjiri, a vocal critic of Uhuru, has accused the President of missing an opportunity to unite the region. 'The President had a golden opportunity of uniting the Mt Kenya region but that chance has slipped through his fingers,' Ngunjiri said in a Facebook post.
Uhuru's efforts to win back the support of his allies have been met with resistance. Disgruntled Tanga Tanga members are demanding a separate meeting with the President, who has lined up a series of activities in the region in the coming weeks.
It remains to be seen whether Uhuru's efforts will yield any results or if the rebellion will continue to intensify.
