On June 29, 2020, the European Union's Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations department (ECHO) donated KES 270 million (2,573,105 Million Euros) to WHO Kenya to support the country's efforts in controlling the spread of COVID-19.
The grant, part of a 30 Million Euros global appeal, will be used to train frontline health workers, strengthen the response effort, and support risk communication and community engagement activities in identified hotspots across the counties.
WHO Kenya will also deploy additional technical personnel to support these activities and implement guidelines at national and county levels.
According to Dr. Rudi Eggers, WHO Representative, the grant comes at a critical time when community transmission is a major concern, and urgent response measures are needed to stop further spread.
EU Ambassador Simon Mordue underlined the added value of the EU's collaboration with the WHO in support of countries and communities at this challenging time, stating that the EU is partnering with the WHO to provide advice and concrete support to the specific COVID-19 related circumstances facing Kenya.
