Kenyan farmers are poised to reap the benefits of a Sh116 million banana processing plant under construction in Taita Taveta County, thanks to a joint investment by the European Union and the county government.

The plant, which is expected to be completed by March next year, will provide an opportunity for local farmers to earn more from their produce after decades of selling at a loss.

Deputy Governor Majala Mlagui has urged farmers to increase production to sustain the plant, warning that neighboring counties and even Tanzania could benefit if locals fail to meet the demand.

Over 500 farmers are expected to benefit from the plant once it starts operation next year.

Meanwhile, Chuka University has announced plans to offer free soil testing services to all farmers in the region for the next two years, providing on-spot soil analysis and fertilizer recommendations to save farmers between Sh1,500 and Sh2,000.

Researchers from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology have also developed a Climate Atlas tool that provides temperature and rainfall predictions for up to 100 years, enabling farmers to make informed decisions about crop selection and investment.

The World Bank has also offered a grant of Sh39.4 million to 240 farmer groups in Homa Bay County to improve agricultural production, while farmers have been advised to use certified potato seeds to boost yields.

Co-operative Bank and CFAO Kenya Ltd have signed a partnership deal to ease the acquisition of farm equipment, making it more affordable for farmers to access machinery and tools.
